چکیده

Caspofungin acetate (Cancidas, MK-0991, L-743,872) is a parenteral antifungal agent indicated in the treatment of invasive aspergillosis in patients who are intolerant of or whose infection is refractory to other antifungal therapies. It is the first member of a novel class of antifungals, the echinocandins, to be made available in the USA. As a class, the echinocandins possess a mechanism of action that is distinct from those of the polyenes, azoles, allylamines, or flucytosine. Echinocandins inhibit synthesis of β-(1,3)-D-glucan, a component of fungal cell walls (1).

Caspofungin for the Treatment of Immunocompromised and Severely Ill Children and Neonates with Invasive Fungal Infections

Caspofungin is the first member of the echinocandin class of antifungals to receive an indication for the use in infants, children, and adolescents from the United States Food and Drug Administration. Daily doses of 50 mg/m(2) result in pharmacokinetic parameters that are similar to those observed in adults. Although fewer data are available, the response rates in pediatric patients who receive...

Treatment and prophylaxis of invasive candidiasis with anidulafungin, caspofungin and micafungin and its impact on use and costs - review of the literature

Invasive fungal infections are on the rise. Echinocandins are a relatively new class of antifungal drugs that act by inhibition of a key enzyme necessary for integrity of the fungal cell wall. Currently there are three available agents: caspofungin, micafungin and anidulafungin. While the individual echinocandin antifungals have a different spectrum of licensed indications, basically all of the...

Micafungin: a new echinocandin.

Micafungin, a potent inhibitor of 1,3-beta-D-glucan synthase, has become the second available agent in the echinocandins class that is approved for use in clinical practice. This agent shares with caspofungin an identical spectrum of in vitro activity against Candida albicans, non-albicans species of Candida, and Aspergillus species, as well as several but not all pathogenic molds. If anything,...

Treatment and prophylaxis of invasive candidiasis with anidulafungin, caspofungin and micafungin - review of the literature

Working by a distinct cell wall-specific mechanism of action, the echinocandin class of antifungals has substantially expanded the range of available treatments for invasive Candida infections. Anidulafungin, caspofungin and micafungin were investigated versus drugs from earlier antifungal classes in large clinical trials that demonstrated their excellent clinical and microbiological efficacy i...

Comparison of echinocandin antifungals

The incidence of invasive fungal infections, especially those due to Aspergillus spp. and Candida spp., continues to increase. Despite advances in medical practice, the associated mortality from these infections continues to be substantial. The echinocandin antifungals provide clinicians with another treatment option for serious fungal infections. These agents possess a completely novel mechani...
